The site Forebears.io lets you check how many people in the world share your surname and where they live – if you’re called Smith or Jones, that is going to be a lot.
Forebears also traces the history of surnames – in all, it has information on the meanings and distribution of 11 million last names.
The site says it is a ‘reference aid that helps researchers find historical and genealogical records naming their ancestors’.
